Most small lifts in the Yakima Valley (trusses, beams, HVAC units, hot tubs, storage containers, cold-storage and packing-house equipment) are done with a boom truck or a small mobile crane, rented with an operator by the hour.

The price depends on the crane size the lift needs, travel time, the minimum hours, and whether you need a rigger or a lift plan. The more precisely you describe the load, the closer the quote.

Most lifts are billed portal to portal, from the yard and back. A clear, flat, firm setup spot near the load saves time and money.

How the job usually goes

  1. Describe the lift. Weight of the heaviest piece, how high and how far from where the truck can park.
  2. Site check. Power lines, ground conditions, room for outriggers.
  3. Quote. Crane size, minimum hours, travel, rigging, any permits.
  4. Lift day. The operator and rigger set up, lift and pack up. Keep people clear of the load.

Local rules worth knowing

Operator certification: Washington requires crane operators to be certified, and cranes in construction work to be inspected and certified (WAC 296-155 Part L). Ask for the operator's certification.

Power lines: lifts near overhead lines have strict clearance rules. Tell the company about any lines near the lift.

Street use: setting up on a city street may need a permit from Yakima or your town.

Before you hire: a short checklist

  • Give the weight, size and lift distance of the heaviest piece.
  • Ask for the operator's certification and the company's insurance certificate.
  • Ask about minimum hours, travel time and overtime.
  • Ask whether you need a rigger or a written lift plan.
  • Mention power lines, soft ground or slopes up front.

Questions

Boom truck or crane: which do I need?

Boom trucks handle many light lifts like trusses, HVAC units and hot tubs. Heavier or farther lifts need a mobile crane. Give the crane company the weight and distance and they'll size it.

Can I rent a crane without an operator?

Some smaller machines rent bare, but crane operation in Washington construction work requires a certified operator. Most homeowners and small contractors rent with an operator.

How far ahead should I book?

A few days to two weeks is common; harvest and summer building season fill up faster.

Are you a crane company?

No. We're a free referral service. We pass your request to up to 3 independent crane services, and you hire one of them, or none, directly.
